I’ve probably watched the Harry Potter films a hundred times. I’m not kidding. They’re part of a collection of comfort movies I return to again and again. However—and don’t come for me—I’ve never actually read the books. With autumn finally here, and the weather turning crisp enough for blankets and hot drinks, it felt like the perfect time to start.
As cliché as it sounds, the first book really is better than the movie. And as someone who adores the films, that’s saying something. I always knew there were small details I was missing by not reading the books, but even in the first one—which many say is the most faithful adaptation—there’s just so much more richness and depth.
Now, I finally understand the magic. It was always there in the movies, but reading the words brings everything to life in a different way. I can see why kids were completely captivated by this world—it’s descriptive, imaginative and full of heart. And if you’ve ever felt alone or unsure of your place in the world, Harry’s realization that he isn’t the problem—that there’s something greater waiting for him—is deeply moving.
My goal is to read all of the books by the end of the year. Wish me luck!

Would I Recommend? Absolutely! I am so glad that I now have way more context for some of my favorite movies. It has way more scenes than the movie and you’ll enjoy seeing the Dursley’s be terrified of Harry.
